The NATO strap was developed in the 1960s, when the British Ministry of Defense was looking for a durable strap for the issue watches of its armed forces. Its military origins are still reflected in its name (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or OTAN in French), which refers to its NATO G10 inventory code.
