Today, an iconic watch from the world of French watchmaking is being reborn in a contemporary version while retaining its authenticity. It is the LIP T18 Original, a watch manufactured in France, in Besançon, its city of origin. With its hand-wound mechanical movement, it replicates the dimensions and construction of the historic model while incorporating improvements tailored to contemporary style and expectations.
For this reissue, the 316L stainless steel case has been slightly enlarged to better reflect current trends. Carefully polished and brushed, it showcases a dial inspired by the vintage model, featuring hand-applied raised numerals and a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock in gunmetal gray. The entire watch is protected by a rectangular sapphire crystal, treated with an anti-reflective coating and slightly domed for an elegant and functional look.
This limited-edition watch is presented on a brown ostrich leather strap, handcrafted in Besançon. The strap features a folding clasp that combines comfort and security.
The back of the watch offers a breathtaking view of its mechanical movement thanks to a transparent case back. There, you’ll discover the refined details of the craftsmanship, such as the “Côtes de Genève,” pearl finishing, and the snail-patterned ratchet wheel. This 3-hertz oscillating caliber ensures enhanced accuracy while remaining true to traditional finishes.
Originally designed by André Donat in 1931 at the request of Fred Lip, the T18 was a visionary watch that inspired many manufacturers, including its Swiss counterparts. Between 1933 and 1949, more than 400,000 units were produced, making it the most widely manufactured rectangular watch in the world.
With this reissue, LIP—now led by Pierre-Alain Bérard—is breathing new life into an icon of French watchmaking, blending history, craftsmanship, and modernity. A true work of art to own, reserved for connoisseurs of exceptional watches and collectible pieces.
