The Origins of LIP Watches

The history of LIP watches dates back to the 19th century, when the brand’s founder, Emmanuel Lipmann, decided to establish a watchmaking workshop in Besançon, France, in 1867. In its early days, the company focused primarily on manufacturing dials for other watchmakers. However, his ambition and passion for watchmaking soon led him to expand his business.

The turning point for LIP came in 1904, when Ernest Lipmann, the founder's grandson, decided to begin producing wristwatches. At a time when pocket watches dominated the market, this visionary decision helped forge LIP's reputation as a pioneer in the field of watchmaking.

LIP During the Wars

LIP has closely followed developments in the watchmaking industry over the decades. During World War I, the brand supplied wristwatches to French soldiers. In the 1930s, it introduced technical innovations, including France’s first self-winding mechanical movement.

During World War II, LIP faced difficulties due to the German occupation, but it managed to resume operations after the Liberation. In the decades that followed, the brand expanded its watch lineup to include iconic models such as the “LIP Himalaya,” a watch that accompanied the French expedition that conquered Annapurna in 1950.

LIP to the Present

The 1970s marked another turning point with the launch of the "Electronic" watch, one of the first quartz watches for the general public. LIP continued to innovate and adapt to changing market trends throughout the following decades.

Over the years, the brand has succeeded in preserving its heritage and its commitment to innovation. Today, LIP watches continue to embody French elegance and are appreciated by watch enthusiasts around the world. The current collection combines traditional craftsmanship with modern designs, thus continuing the long tradition of watchmaking excellence established by Emmanuel Lipmann more than a century ago.
