Whether you’re into competitive swimming, a quick dip, or even scuba diving, wear a water-resistant watch that’s practical and stylish. Ruckfield, Kelton, Ice-Watch, Performer, Sector, Patrouille de France—all the major brands invite you to dive in with your watch on your wrist!

What are the characteristics of a water-resistant watch?

A water-resistant watch allows you to go underwater without damaging the mechanism. Our watches are suitable for various types of swimming. Some are water-resistant up to 50 m, while others can accompany you on dives as deep as 400 m.

In watchmaking, the concept of water resistance doesn’t so much refer to whether or not you can submerge your water-resistant watch underwater, but rather to its ability to withstand water pressure. The deeper you dive, the greater the pressure will be. In fact, if your water-resistant watch isn’t designed for such conditions, water will seep in.

For a watch to be considered “water-resistant,” the terms “water-resistant” or “étanche” must be specifically listed. The word “waterproof,” on its own, simply indicates that your watch can withstand minor splashes and dust.

How can you keep your watch water-resistant?

To ensure your watch remains water-resistant, use it only in appropriate situations. To do so, follow the usage guidelines—particularly those regarding pressure—which are listed in the instruction manual for your water-resistant watch.

Choose your watch model based on your activities. If you’re athletic, opt for a watch like the Ruckfield Classique, specially designed for rugby referees, which is water-resistant to a depth of 100 m. To combine sportiness and glamour, check out the model offered by Ice-Watch—the pink Ice Glam Brushed, designed for women. If you want to exude elegance by the pool or on the beach, a model like the Titac x Micmac St Tropez from Kelton is the perfect choice, with its chic, ultra-trendy design.

In addition, follow a few simple maintenance steps to keep your watch water-resistant for years to come. Clean it with a toothbrush and soapy water, then dry it. Finally, have the watch’s water resistance checked regularly by a watch professional.

If you experience a water resistance issue with your water-resistant watch, please don't hesitate to let us know. Please note that all of our watch models come with a two-year warranty.

Watch Water Resistance / ATM Guide

Are you confused by the “ATM” or “meter” ratings on watches? Are you looking for information about water-resistant watches to find out if you can, for example, swim in a pool while wearing one? Check out our guide to watch water resistance, where you’ll learn that meters do not correspond to the equivalent depth underwater. These ratings are not standardized across the watch industry.

Water-resistant watch, 50 meters / 5 ATM

A watch that is water-resistant to 50 meters will allow you to submerge it, but only during gentle activities such as bathing in a tub or swimming in a pool without diving. However, a direct stream of water from a shower or faucet hitting the crystal or push buttons can exert pressure equivalent to that at a depth of 50 meters, and your watch may then let in water.

Water-resistant watch, 100 meters / 10 ATM

A watch that is water-resistant to 100 meters will allow you to come into contact with water, as well as handle immersion and be used even during competitive swimming.

Water-resistant watch, 200 meters / 20 ATM

A watch that is water-resistant to 200 meters will allow you to use it in deep water for activities such as snorkeling, jet skiing, or diving.

Water-resistant watch, 300 meters / 30 ATM

This specification is often used for professional diving watches and is suitable for competitive swimming, diving, various water sports, and scuba diving.

Reminder About Waterproofing

Water resistance is ensured during manufacturing but is not guaranteed for life. Have the battery replaced by a professional watchmaker, who can then inspect the gaskets and replace them if necessary. As a precaution, it is therefore essential to have a watchmaker perform a water resistance test at least twice a year, even if everything appears to be in order.

The normal aging of the seals that provide waterproofing is accelerated by thermal shock or extreme temperature fluctuations. Saltwater, the acidity of sweat, perfume, and chemicals damage the seals and reduce their waterproofing life.

In most cases, it is not the water itself that is the problem, but rather the water's temperature. Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock of more than 20°C): going from a sauna to a cooling bath, taking a very hot shower or bath, or swimming in very cold water after prolonged exposure to the sun...

Water condensation under the watch glass or on the dial indicates that the watch is no longer water-resistant and should be inspected by our watchmakers as soon as possible.
