Kelton isn't designing new watches; it's revisiting its archives

Club de la Montre is a French retailer of brand-name watches, based in Toulouse. This article explains how to choose a vintage Kelton watch in 2026, case shape by case shape. Our recommendation to start with: the Colorama, the 28-mm oval model priced at 95 euros—the design that made the brand famous.

The Essentials in 30 Seconds

  • Kelton was founded in the early 1950s through a partnership between the American company Timex and a watchmaker in Besançon, and was relaunched in the mid-2010s.
  • Of the 159 models for which we have documented the case shape, 105 are not round: 41 are oval, 33 are barrel-shaped, 22 are square, and 9 are octagonal.
  • We offer 207 Kelton watches for sale, ranging in price from 21 to 1,248 euros, and 58 product listings list France as the country of origin.
  • The movement is quartz in 106 models, but 53 are mechanical or automatic, which is rare in this price range.
  • Our selection below ranges from 30 to 396 euros.

What Kelton Was, and What She Has Become Again

In the early 1950s, the American company Timex sought to establish production in Europe. An agreement was reached with the Besançon watchmaker, on one condition: that a French brand be launched at the same time. That brand would be Kelton. For thirty years, it adorned French wrists like no other, at prices everyone could afford. In fact, the company now names one of its collections “1955,” in reference to those early years.

Then came a long hiatus. Kelton disappeared from store shelves for decades before being relaunched in the mid-2010s, with a clear focus: reprinting its own designs rather than creating new ones. That is what makes its catalog so unique, and that is what the figure below reflects.

The surprising statistic: 105 out of 159 cases are not round

On September 18, 2026, we counted the shapes of the Kelton cases in our catalog. Of the 159 items for which this characteristic is listed, 54 are round and 105 are not: 41 are oval, 33 are barrel-shaped, 22 are square, and 9 are octagonal. No other brand we distribute shows such an imbalance.

This isn't just a designer's whim. The shape is the hallmark of vintage style, far more so than the color of the dial or the choice of hands. The 1950s through the 1970s were the only period when the watch industry mass-produced anything other than round watches, and Kelton has kept the molds from that era. When you wear an oval Colorama or a Square, you’re wearing a silhouette that no one designs anymore.

There are two other figures worth noting before making a choice. Fifty-eight Kelton listings list France as the country of origin, which is still rare at these price points, and of the 168 models with documented movements, 30 are mechanical and 23 are automatic. A hand-wound watch priced under 200 euros is virtually impossible to find anywhere else. We had already noted this in our overview of French watch brands.

The Kelton Spirit

A brand is best understood in context rather than through a spec sheet. Here are six images from the Kelton collection—from the train platform to the gaming table—and for each one, the exact model you see on the wrist.

The square—the most Kelton-esque shape

This is the shape that defined the brand in the 1950s, and the one that looks best on a slender wrist today. Kelton offers it in both sharp-angled and cushion-shaped versions with softened edges. Three styles, ranging from casual accessories to sophisticated pieces.

Kelton the Daring

33-mm cushion-shaped case, burgundy leather. Square in shape, but with softened corners.

Kelton Lady 50's Silver

Kelton Lady 50's Silver

145 €

23 mm, bezel set with gemstones, black leather strap. A ladies' watch from the 1950s, faithfully reproduced.

The Lady 50's deserves a mention. At 23 mm, it’s the smallest watch in our Kelton catalog, and one of the few that fully embraces the vintage style. Ladies’ watches from the 1950s were small—almost like pieces of jewelry—and this one stays true to that tradition. If you’re unsure which diameter will suit you best, our guide to choosing the right diameter based on your wrist circumference will help you figure it out.

The oval: the hallmark of the 1970s

The Colorama is the model you can recognize from a distance. A flat oval case, a single-color dial, and no complications. It comes in 28 mm and 35 mm sizes under the name Grande Colorama, making it one of the few truly unisex watches on the market.

Kelton Colorama Red

95,20 €

The 28-mm oval case in a bold red. The brand's most recognizable design.

Kelton Grande Colorama Gold

125 €

The same Colorama in 35 mm, in gold. It moves from one wrist to another without losing its style.

Kelton x Inès de la Fressange

Kelton x Inès de la Fressange

225 €

Large 35 mm Colorama, camel-colored strap. The oval case was customized by a stylist.

Our collaboration with Inès de la Fressange has resulted in a series of bracelets and dials for this oval-shaped watch that stand out from our standard catalog. We offer eleven models, all based on the Grande Colorama. It’s the same case, styled differently. You can browse the rest of our vintage women’s collection in our vintage women’s watches section.

The Barrel, and When Form Becomes Mechanical

The barrel-shaped case—this cushion-shaped case with curved sides—is the most masculine design in the Kelton collection. It is also the one the brand has chosen for its most sophisticated movements.

Kelton RC22 Navy Mesh

Kelton Vietnam 2 Mechanical

175 €

37 mm, hand-wound, battery-free. A mechanical watch at this price is still a rarity.

Kelton RC24 Automatic

Kelton RC24 Automatic

395,75 €

Black barrel-shaped watch with automatic movement and a perforated strap. The standout piece in the catalog.

The Vietnam 2 is the standout item in the catalog. Priced at 175 euros, it features a manual-winding movement with no battery, which means it needs to be wound every morning. This can be a bit of a hassle, but it’s exactly the kind of ritual that vintage watch buyers are looking for. The RC24, on the other hand, features an automatic movement: it winds itself as you wear it. You’ll find the rest of the men’s collection in the men’s vintage watches section, and we’ve covered the topic in greater detail in our guide to men’s vintage watches.

Reissue, neo-retro, or vintage watch: don't confuse them

There are three different types of items that fall under the term “vintage,” and their prices vary.

What It IsWhat You're BuyingAt Kelton
Vintage watchAn original part, with its age and the maintenance it will require. The secondhand market—not our catalog.
ReprintThe original design, refurbished, with the warranty that comes with it.Colorama, Lady 50's, Square, Vietnam.
Neo-retroA new design that draws on the style of the era.RC24, Heritage, the 1955 Diving Series.

Kelton falls almost entirely into the second column, and that's what makes it so appealing: you get a 1960s-style watch with a 2026 movement and a warranty. All our models are listed on the Kelton watches page.

How to Choose a Vintage Kelton

Three questions are all it takes, in this order.

  1. Choose the shape before the color. It’s the shape that will make your watch look dated. Oval and barrel shapes are reminiscent of the 1970s, square shapes of the 1950s, while round shapes never look dated.
  2. Measure your wrist and take the era into account. Vintage watches are small. A Colorama is 28 mm, and a Lady 50's is 23 mm. For wrist circumferences under 15 cm, these sizes are just right. For wrist circumferences over 17 cm, go for the 35 mm Grande Colorama or the 38 mm tonneau.
  3. Decide whether you're willing to wind your watch. A quartz watch can go unwound for two years; a manual-winding watch requires a daily action; an automatic watch simply needs to be worn.

What You Need to Know Before Buying

Three well-earned points.

Water resistance is low on vintage models. Of the 147 Kelton data sheets where this information is provided, 62 are rated for only 30 meters—which is enough for rain and washing your hands, but not for swimming. This applies to the reissues, which are faithful to the original vintage watches. The 1955 diving series, on the other hand, are water-resistant to 100 and 200 meters.

Mineral glass accounts for two-thirds of the catalog. There are 103 models with mineral glass, compared to 45 with sapphire and 8 with acrylic. Acrylic is a deliberate choice for the reissues: it is the original material; it scratches, but it can be polished.

Low prices sell out fast. The Idyllic and Square models, priced at 21 and 30 euros, are end-of-line items. The product page shows actual availability, so be sure to check it if you're buying for a specific date.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vintage Kelton Watches

Is Kelton a French brand?

Yes. Kelton was founded in the early 1950s as a result of an agreement between the American company Timex and the Besançon watchmaking industry, with the creation of a French brand as a condition. In our catalog, 58 Kelton entries list France as the country of origin.

Which Kelton watch is the most iconic?

The Colorama, without a doubt. It’s a 28-millimeter oval watch with a solid-color dial, available in about ten colors, and it’s the silhouette you can recognize from a distance. It’s also available in a 35-millimeter size under the name Grande Colorama. Expect to pay 95 euros for the entry-level model.

Are Kelton watches quartz or mechanical?

Both. Of the 168 models whose movements we document, 106 are quartz, 30 are hand-wound mechanical, 23 are automatic, and 9 are solar-powered. The Vietnam 2, a mechanical watch, costs 175 euros, which is rare for this type of movement.

What Kelton size is best for a slim wrist?

The 23-mm Lady 50's and the 28-mm Colorama are designed for just that. Watches from the 1950s and 1960s were significantly smaller than they are today, and Kelton's reissues stay true to that size. If your wrist circumference is more than 17 cm, opt for the 35-mm Grande Colorama.

Can you swim while wearing a vintage Kelton watch?

Rarely. Of the 147 product sheets that list water resistance, 62 are rated for up to 30 meters, which rules out swimming. The exceptions are the 1955 series, which were designed for diving and rated for 100 to 200 meters.

What's the difference between Colorama and Grande Colorama?

The diameter, and nothing else. The Colorama is 28 millimeters, and the Grande Colorama is 35. Same oval case, same plain dial, same quartz movement. The former is best suited for a slender wrist, while the latter fits any wrist.

What is the Kelton x Inès de la Fressange collection?

A collaboration with the designer, based on the Grande Colorama case. We offer eleven models, ranging from 195 to 299 euros, featuring dials and straps designed specifically for this collection, including the Flora floral pattern.

Is a Kelton a genuine vintage watch?

This is a reissue, not a vintage watch. You're purchasing the original design, fully restored, with a modern movement and a warranty. For an original piece, you'll need to look on the secondhand market, with all the maintenance that entails.

Our final tip

If you're new to the brand, go for the Colorama. It's the oval-shaped watch that made Kelton famous; it costs 95 euros, and it's the shape that will make your watch stand the test of time best. If you're looking for the experience rather than the design, go for the Vietnam 2 and its mechanical movement that needs to be wound every morning.

The rest of the catalog can be found on the Kelton watches page and in the French women's watches section. For details on the collections, our guide to Kelton collections covers them all, and our selection of unique women's watches expands the scope to include other brands.
