In 1954, Maurice Herzog, a French mountaineer famous for being the first to reach the summit of Annapurna, met Fred Lip, the grandson of LIP’s founder. Herzog, in search of a sturdy and reliable watch for his expeditions, inspired Fred Lip to create a model that could withstand the extreme conditions of the world’s highest mountains. Thus was born the LIP Himalaya watch, designed for adventurers and athletes.

The origins of the GDG collection date back to 1958, when Charles de Gaulle, then President of the French Republic, received a LIP watch as a gift. This model, the “R23,” was quickly adopted by de Gaulle, who wore it on numerous official occasions, thereby reinforcing the LIP brand’s image as a symbol of prestige and quality. This watch became a symbol of elegance and understated sophistication—traits associated with General de Gaulle’s personality.
LIP’s GDG collection is a modern reinterpretation of this iconic watch, designed to embody the spirit and values of Charles de Gaulle: rigor, patriotism, and elegance. Created in the 1970s, at the height of the cultural and technological revolution, the LIP Mach 2000 is the result of a collaboration between Fred Lip, the brand’s heir, and designer Roger Tallon, an iconic figure in French industrial design.
Roger Tallon, known for his revolutionary designs in various fields—from household appliances to transportation (notably the TGV)—infused the LIP Mach 2000 with a unique, futuristic aesthetic. The model stands out for its pebble-shaped case, rounded contours, and off-center crown—elements that broke with the watchmaking conventions of the time. Rally Collection
The LIP Rallye watch collection has its roots in the golden age of motorsports in the 1960s and 1970s.
The LIP Rallye was first introduced in the 1960s, at the height of the motor racing boom. Its distinctive design draws direct inspiration from the dashboards of race cars of that era, featuring clearly legible dials, highly visible gauges, and high-contrast hands, allowing for quick and accurate time-reading even under the most extreme conditions.
